Mary C. Williams, DO, FACN
Osteopathic Psychiatrist

 Mary C. Williams

I am a licensed physician who specializes in the field of adult general psychiatry.   I work with people using a wholistic approach. We work together to decide what is needed to help your natural healing ability to be more effective.  This usually includes the use of talk therapy to examine what triggers you may be reacting to and develop improved ways to respond to life events.

I am interested in what your beliefs are, how you look at the world, what has helped in the past, and what things you don’t want to change as well as those things you want help in changing.

I believe what we eat is important and proper fuel is essential if we expect to work to our full capacity. Ways to integrate exercise and overcome resistances to healthy habits will be explored.  Spiritual beliefs are respected. Physical problems will be evaluated and pursued. I will work closely with your other health care providers.  Medications will be prescribed if indicated and if the benefits outweigh any potential risk.

My training allows me to use many methods of psychotherapy as well as to prescribe medications. Sometimes I am the therapist as well as the prescribing psychiatrist, other times I work with your therapist.

My training includes the use of a variety of psychotherapy methods, traditional and non-traditional, which I tailor to meet your specific needs. I am also certified in Zero Balancing. This is a modality that helps integrate mind, body, and spirit in the healing process. RADAR, my chocolate Labrador Retriever provides pet therapy.

In 1979 I received my Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Next I practiced first as a general practitioner and then as an emergency medicine physician for four years prior to getting my training in psychiatry. I spent five years in Detroit, Michigan doing residencies in Psychiatry at Michigan Osteopathic Medical Center and Wayne State University/Lafayette Clinic.

Since 1989 I have been practicing psychiatry in the Roanoke area. My credentials include certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. I am also a former president of the Southwestern Virginia Psychiatric Society and the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists.  I am an honorary Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychiatry. I often speak to local and national groups on a variety of mental health related topics.
